Captain Burke's Fall Fishing Newsletter
Welcome to Captain Burke's Fall Fishing Newsletter, your guide to the best angling experiences on the St. Johns River, Lake Monroe, Lake Beresford, and the Lemon Bluff area in Central Florida. As a native Floridian with years of experience, Captain Burke shares his insights on catching the region's most sought-after species this autumn.
Fall Fishing Forecast
Crappie
As water temperatures drop below 70°F, crappie begin to school in deeper waters. Look for them around submerged structures in 8-15 feet of water. Small jigs in white or chartreuse work well, but live minnows are the top bait choice. Fish during early mornings or late evenings for best results.
Bream and Shellcrackers
These panfish can be found in shallower waters near vegetation. Use red wigglers or crickets on light tackle. The new moon phase often triggers increased feeding activity. Focus on areas with 3-6 feet of water, especially near fallen trees or lily pads.
Bass
Fall is prime time for bass fishing. As water cools, bass become more active and move to shallower waters. Topwater lures and soft plastics are effective early in the season. As temperatures continue to drop, switch to crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Target areas with sudden depth changes or submerged vegetation.
Catfish
Catfish remain active throughout fall. Use cut bait or live worms in deeper holes of the river. Night fishing can be particularly productive, especially during the full moon phase. Look for areas with slower current and depths of 10-20 feet.
Seasonal Bait Recommendations
Artificial Lures vs Live Bait
Crappie Small jigs, soft plastic Minnows Bream/Shellcracker Tiny poppers, micro jigs Red wigglers, crickets Bass Crankbaits, soft plastics Shiner Catfish Stink bait Cut bait, worms
Vessel Maintenance Tips
To ensure your fishing vessel remains in top condition, follow these monthly maintenance steps:
Check and change engine oil if needed
Inspect propeller for damage
Clean bilge and check bilge pump operation
Examine hull for any cracks or damage
Test all navigation lights
Lubricate moving parts and hinges
Weather and Water Conditions
Fall in Central Florida brings milder temperatures and lower humidity, creating ideal fishing conditions. Water temperatures typically range from 65-75°F, triggering increased feeding activity across all species. Pay attention to cold fronts, which can temporarily slow fishing but often lead to excellent action once fish acclimate.Remember, successful fishing is about adapting to conditions. Always check local weather forecasts and adjust your tactics accordingly. With Captain Burke's tips and your own perseverance, you're sure to have a memorable fall fishing season in Central Florida's beautiful waterways.Tight lines and happy fishing!
